about

This brooding and emotional alternative and folk rock song expresses a lot of frustration with having to work so much and for so little. The song also is indie and sounds like some 90s rock. It's an illusion to think that we are free. We are extremely dependent on so many things. Most people are an economic slave to debt, credit, and loans. We have to work so much to just barely make it. We have little to show for our hard work. It's important to recognize this enslavement, so we can avoid falling into the trap of borrowing and then working ourselves to death. With capitalism, consumerism, drugs and other addictions, materialism, the rich, and the media, we have to realize that we are being manipulated and lied to, just to make a few rich. You are only truly free when you have nothing and can do whatever you want to do whenever you want to. It's not okay to spend your entire life working most of the week, paying for an automobile that you mostly drive to work, paying for a house that you are hardly at, and having a family that you barely see just to say what kind of job you have or how much money you make. That is not success. Success is happiness and happiness is you doing what you like to do with your time. Just do no harm and take care of yourself, others, the animals, and the Earth. Peace and be Vegan!

lyrics

Verse 1:
I started out so innocent; Not knowing what I’d be
Thinking anything was possible; So many hopes and dreams
All my life I believed; That I would succeed
But now I’m the fool; All your lies and manipulations, they were your tools

Bridge:
Ooh, but I’m not free
Get your greedy hands off of me
There’s so many things I’ll never see
Oh, why can’t you just let me be

Chorus:
What’s wrong with me being free; Why do you gotta put these chains all around me
I work all goddamn day; I swear sometimes I think I’m a slave
And I’m so tired when I get home; It’s all I can do to rest my bones
And since you made me this way; I’m gonna have to work until I see my grave
I’m gonna have to work until I see my grave

Verse 2:
When I was young; The world took me in
There was so much to learn; Didn’t know what to believe
It’s not okay how things turned out; I can’t even understand how
It’s like you trapped me with your lies; All your money and things, they were the ties

Repeat Bridge:
Ooh, but I’m not free
Get your greedy hands off of me
There’s so many things I’ll never see
Oh, why can’t you just let me be

Repeat Chorus:
What’s wrong with me being free; Why do you gotta put these chains all around me
I work all goddamn day; I swear sometimes I think I’m a slave
And I’m so tired when I get home; It’s all I can do to rest my bones
And since you made me this way; I’m gonna have to work until I see my grave
I’m gonna have to work until I see my grave

Guitar Solo

Verse 3:
This stupid game that you made me play; It’s not a life worth living every day
It’s like my world is in a cave; And you’re only happy when I behave
But I just want to see the world and be with the people I love; Do what I want, enjoy life, create, and have some fun
Instead, I have to work to make you rich; And all I have to show for it is a bunch of shit

Repeat Bridge:
Ooh, but I’m not free
Get your greedy hands off of me
There’s so many things I’ll never see
Oh, why can’t you just let me be

Chorus:
What’s wrong with me being free; Why do you gotta put these chains all around me
I work all goddamn day; I swear sometimes I think I’m a slave
Oh, why can’t I just be free; That sounds okay to me
I got to work so much to just scrape by; I can’t even live my life
You know I’m so tired when I get home; It’s all I can do to rest my bones
But since you made me this way; I’m gonna have to work until I see my grave
I’m gonna have to work until I see my grave, I’m gonna have to work until I see my grave
I’m gonna have to work until I see my grave
